In this class we will generate portraits working in a sculptural approach. The class will demonstrate a wide range of mark-making using both charcoal and eraser as paint tools. The demonstrations will show various solutions to drawing the features under different lighting conditions, and with academic knowledge of the features, how to capture an energetic and expressive finish. Students will be able to draw along during the class, and will gain an understanding of how to “think spontaneously with the tools” reproducing the marks as demonstrated. The end result will be a more tactile, and immediate finish to the drawings we produce throughout the class.
A virtual room link will be sent to you up to 24 hours prior to your class start date.
Complimentary 10-day access to each recorded session. Recordings are emailed the day after each live session.
Charcoal Pencils for effective range of values. I use Generals Charcoal Pencils favoring the 4B, as the 2B is a little too hard for average design drawing, and 6B has a tendency to break often.
18″x24″ newsprint pad-preferred smooth, but rough will also work.
Drawing Board – to keep the paper from flexing and warping while working on the surface.
Razor Blades – to sharpen the pencils.
