This is a super intense, fast moving class. Be prepared to crank out paintings! We will learn how to create volume, light, and sound structure quickly and effectively though oil painting.
The brands I prefer are Michael Harding, Old Holland, Windsor Newton, and Sennelier. These are professional grade paints and can be pretty expensive.
Gamblin and Rembrandt brand paints are also decent.
Whatever brand you do choose, do not buy student grade paint. Especially WINTON brand! The reason it is called “student” paint is that it has less pigment to oil ratio. This will be a headache to you, and even though they might be less expensive to purchase, you will end up using more paint, thus saving no money in the long run.
The colors with the asterisk *, means I strongly advise you to buy them. Please make sure you have cad orange OLD HOLLAND and burnt umber OLD HOLLAND.
*Titanium white (Windsor Newton or Michael Harding)
*Ivory black (Sennelier)
*Yellow Ochre Pale (Windsor Newton)
*Raw Umber (Windsor Newton)
*Burnt Umber (Old Holland)
*Red Umber (Old Holland)
*Burnt Sienna (Old Holland)
Persian Red (Old Holland)
Green Umber (Old Holland)
*Cad Yellow or Lemon Yellow (Windsor Newton)
*Viridian Green Deep (Old Holland or Windsor Newton)
*Violet Grey (Old Holland)
*Cad Orange (Old Holland)
*Cad Red (Windsor Newton)
Cobalt Blue (Old Holland)
Ultramarine Blue (Old Holland)
*Transparent Oxide Red (Michael Harding)
*Alizarin Crimson (Windsor Newton)
Gamblin odorless mineral spirits
Damar varnish (Windsor Newton)
Cold-pressed or refined Linseed oil (Windsor Newton)
I would buy a variety of sizes from 00 to 16 Flats and filberts are both nice to have for variety in your brush work. I like Escoda flats or rounds for my tiny brushes 00, 0. I prefer Escoda or Windsor Newton Monarch brushes, but Rosemary makes nice brushes as well.
palette (glass, wood, or even gray palette paper in a sealable container will work)
