This class will specifically focus on a step-by-step approach for portrait painting. Each class will go in depth into the process of creating a patterned background portrait from wash drawing to gold leaf application. This class is geared towards an intermediate artist, covering elements of anatomy, and flesh color, with emphasis on portrait likeness. Students will learn about light-logic, composition, how to create the feeling of volume, proper use of mediums, and how to mix a flesh paint palette. Andrea will demonstrate and talk students through each step, so students gain a better understanding of how to create more realistic work. Students will also be going over the process of creating a pattern, how to get that pattern onto the background, how to apply gold leaf, and what to do after the gold leaf process is done to finish the background. This will be a fast-moving class with a lot of information so be prepared to paint!
A virtual room link will be sent to you up to 24 hours prior to your class start date.
Complimentary 10-day access to each recorded session. Recordings are emailed the day after each live session.
The brands I prefer are Michael Harding, Old Holland, Windsor Newton, and Sennelier. These are professional grade paints. Gamblin and Rembrandt brand paints are also decent but any professional grade paint is acceptable. Whatever brand you do choose, do not buy student grade paint. Especially WINTON brand! The reason it is called “student” paint is that it has less pigment to oil ratio. This will be a headache to you, and even though they might be less expensive to purchase, you will end up using more paint, thus saving no money in the long run. Also, please stay away from water-soluble paints which have a completely different make up and application from traditional oils.
The colors with the asterisk *, means I strongly advise you to buy them. Please make sure you have cad orange OLD HOLLAND and burnt umber OLD HOLLAND.
