Do you love the look of such classic animation films as Snow White, Pinocchio, Lilo and Stitch? Watercolor was used by such great artists as Maurice Noble, Gustave Tenggren and Sam Armstrong, just to name a few. We will study and paint the specific techniques in watercolor used to create their beautiful backgrounds in animation films. By learning the techniques in color mixing using watercolor, you will improve your color theory knowledge for also creating digitally painted pieces for your productions. By utilizing this concept, you will capture the traditional media essence.
A virtual room link will be sent to you up to 24 hours prior to your class start date. A short tutorial will be given prior to the live class starting.
Unable to attend a sessions? No worries, ALL students will have access to watch the recorded session for 10-days. Recording available 1 day after live session.
Hot Press watercolor block. (Smooth paper finish will be important)
Artist grade watercolor set (at least 12 colors)

Masking tape
Low tack tape such as drafting, not masking NICHIBAN #241 is the best tape for watercolor illustration.

Jon Messer was an exhibiting landscape watercolorist in 1984 when he was approached by Carlos Diniz to join his Los Angeles architectural illustration studio. Within his first week at CDA, Jon had the opportunity to meet the late architect Charles Moore and to begin work on Ben Thompson and Associates’ historic renovation of Union Station in Washington, D.C. The following eight years provided an intense and invaluable apprenticeship in technique and teamwork.
Jon Messer Architectural Illustration was established in 1992 in Granada Hills near Los Angeles. Jon is also a published children’s book illustrator.
