I’m a huge advocate of elegant color palettes, which employ simple COLOR THEORY driven by a decisive VISUAL CONCEPT. In this 8-week course we will use the QUILLER COLOR WHEEL as an educational resource as we explore the interactions between primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. I will introduce a closed palette model that I refer to as a PALETTE FORM, which incorporates basic ideas in COLOR THEORY.
A PALETTE FORM is a tuned instrument ready for elegant play. A PALETTE FORM creates an intentional hierarchy of visual order in design based on the science of visual perception and sets the structural integrity of the VISUAL CONCEPT for the painting. The color interactions & sequences are quite beautiful to look at, whether mixed on a palette, in the abstract, or in representation. We will be working with visual concepts based on color theory to create beautiful abstract designs. There will be lots of demonstrations and individual critiques.
RYAN WURMSER is a full-time studio-artist, writer, and teacher. He has taught at California Art Institute, Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art, BACAA (San Francisco), Studio Escalier (France) and privately at his own atelier STUDIO 909 (Thousand Oaks, CA).
Wurmser has also worked as a conceptual and visual development artist in the entertainment industry. A brief list of clients include Landmark Entertainment Group, Disney Imagineering, Spectra Entertainment, Renaissance Entertainment, Universal Studios and Paramount Studios.
His work has been exhibited in numerous venues including the following: Forbes Gallery (NYC), Colorado History Museum, Denver Museum of Art, Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University, Pasadena Museum of Art, Bennington Center for the Arts, USC Fisher Museum of Art, and the Carnegie Museum of Art.
In 2006, he was honored with the Gold Medal for Best Painting at the California Art Club’s 95th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition at the Pasadena Museum of Art and also received the Grand Prize at the “Artists for the New Century” Exhibit (Bennington, VT). In 2015, he was awarded the Portrait Commission of Lord Martin Cecil, 7th Marquess of Exeter, for the Burghley House in England.
Wurmser attended Art Center College of Design and studied extensively at private schools including the California Art Institute, Associates in Art, Steve Huston Studio, LAAFA, Andreeva Academy, Studio Escalier (Paris/Argenton-Chateau, FR), L’Ecole Albert Defois (Les Cerqueux, FR) with Ted Seth Jacobs, and BLFA.
In 2019, he graduated with a Masters Certificate in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica (USM).
In 2020, Wurmser received the Estudio Corazón Founder’s Scholarship to attend the Artist Residency at Ghost Ranch (Abiquiu, NM). He has attended three consecutive artist residencies at Estudio Corazón since 2020.
In spring of 2023, he co-taught a Color to Composition figurative intensive at Studio Escalier in Argenton-Chateau, France, which he will be teaching again in 2024.

LAAFA reserves the right to cancel any class/workshop, limit workshop size, change class/workshop times or substitute instructors for those listed in the schedule.
If a class/workshop is cancelled; students may transfer to another class/workshop, use credit on artschoolvideos.com, keep credit on file or be issued a full refund.
Refunds and Transfers
All online classes and workshops are non-refundable.
Absences
There are no make-ups available for online courses. Students are emailed a 10-day access to each recorded session, made available the next day after the live session.
